How to know when is the “right time”?

That has always been a difficult question: When is the “right time” to start my business? When is the “right time” to go on a diet? When is the “right time” to get married? Or when is the “right time” to join the health club, go on vacation, or even to buy the Euro?

When is the “right time”?

I can answer that question in two words:

Let me explain. Here’s an interesting quote:

“I don’t know the day or time, but the moment is now.”

Get it?

People spend (or waste) a lot of time and energy trying to decide what the “right time” is. They wait and think. And they keep waiting and keep thinking. Many people never figure of what the “right time” is.

The “right time” is that elusive concept, which holds, people back, which stops progress, and which keeps a person from moving forward. Although it is a mysterious phantom hovering over one’s head like the ghost of Christmas past, the “right time” is the subtle barrier that stands between you and success.

Lots of examples (yes, they’re real!):

  • I have a guitarist friend who was offered a one-night gig at a nightclub. He was excited because he dreamed of playing professionally. He turned down the gig because it wasn’t the “right time.”
  • I have another friend who wants to travel to Europe and write about the trip in her travel blog. But she can never find the “right time.”
  • I have yet another friend who continues to delay writing a novel that is playing in her head. She says that this is not the “right time” for the book.

What’s my point?

There is no “right time.” There is only “now”. And if you wait for the “right time,” the time is “never”.

How do you know when the time is “right”?

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you have a real desire to DO something? (e.g., play the guitar, start a business, lose weight)
  • Do you have a burning desire to BE something? (e.g., a writer, doctor, guitarist)
  • Are you willing to work hard (really hard) for it?
  • Are you able to control or limit your fears?
  • Are you getting older?

If you answered “yes” to any or all of these questions, then you have the answer: the “right time” is now.

You don’t need to know the day…

You don’t need to know the time…

But you do need to know the moment…

The moment is now. Right now.
